Twilio SIGNAL 2021 - virtual
Inclusion is not a buzzword: How Twilio built a scanner for non-inclusive terminology
Sayali Pendharkar

In 2020, Twilio committed to becoming an antiracist organization, leveraging its resources to create a more just and equitable world by challenging injustices in our communities, systems, and policies while holding ourselves accountable. In support of the Black Lives Matter movement, Twilio pledged to closely examine our systems to eliminate any oppressive or problematic language we accept and utilize in our technical communication. This includes identifying instances of terms like master, slave, whitelist, and blacklist while suggesting appropriate alternatives. In this session, we will talk about a scanner Twilio built that scans the content of every Pull Request (PR) and identifies non-inclusive terminology, thus keeping us accountable going forward. It annotates the PR and creates an artifact with the details of the usage.
